Morgen is het P-Day. Dan gaat er opnieuw een serie Prime Minister Verkiezingen van start. Er zijn na het koortsachtig overleg van de laatste dagen (en nachten) vier kandidaten voor de post als regeringsleider: de Maoisten schuiven chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal naar voren (ondanks toenemende interne strubbelingen tussen Baburam Bhattarai en Dahal), UML’s kandidaat is Jhala Nath Khanal (ondanks toenemende interne strubbelingen tussen K.P. Oli en Khanal), de NC wil Ram Chandra Paudel als premier (ondanks toenemende interne strubbelingen tussen Sher Bahadur Deuba en Paudel) , en Madhesi Front’s keuze is Bijay Kumar Gachhadar (ondanks… enzovoort).
Uit het dagblad de República: ‘As consensus efforts have failed to no one´s surprise, the race for the prime minister´s post has become wide open with each party vying to form a government under its own leadership.
There are different possible coalition scenarios, none of which, however, looks certain at this point. The Madhesi parties and Maoists have been busy in hectic, behind the scenes negotiations for the last couple of days but there are conflicting reports about the outcome of such talks.
Similarly, UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal´s efforts to form a government led by Khanal have also gained momentum as Plan B for the Maoist party.’
Nachtwerk
Nachtwerk – niet alleen voor Nepalese politici in hun gekonkel aan de macht te komen, maar ook voor stropers.
Uit het WWF bulletin van vorige week: ‘An astonishing 333 rhinos were killed illegally in South Africa in 2010 – the highest rate ever experienced in the country.’
‘Today’s wildlife poachers are well coordinated and employ advanced technologies. Their sophisticated criminal networks use helicopters, night-vision equipment, veterinary tranquilizers and silencers to kill rhinos at night–attempting to avoid military and law enforcement patrols.’
Dit is in Afrika. Zo alarmerend is de situatie in Nepal en India (nog) niet, maar de trend is dezelfde. De vraag naar rhino horn is groeiende.
WWF: ‘The recent rhino crime wave is largely due to a rising demand for rhino horn, which has long been prized as an ingredient in traditional Asian medicine. Its popularity increased in Vietnam after claims that rhino horn possesses cancer-curing properties, despite any medical evidence.’
Als eerder beschreven in Nepal Nieuws van 21-12-2010: in China worden tijgers gekweekt in zogenaamde tigerfarms, maar dit is onvoldoende. Door de alsmaar toenemende vraag naar traditional medicins (en afrodisiaca) wordt de druk om tijgers en neushoorns te stropen steeds groter.
Een oplettende lezer van Nepal Nieuws stuurde een verwijzing naar een onluisterend artikel in het Indiase blad Tehelka.
Twee journalisten zijn geïnfiltreerd in het milieu van stropers als agents of a tiger skin buyer: ‘We broke into a poacher network and found one tiger is killed every two weeks.’
‘The Indo-Nepal border. Dangerous men. Small hideouts. And rampant trade.
On 22 November, we met with poachers Kailash, alias Gullu, and Dinesh. We recorded our conversation (translated from Hindi):
Kailash: I have the stocked tiger skins in Nepal. If you want it I have to bring it to India.
Tehelka: You don’t have it right now?
Kailash: I have the stuff. But it’s in the safe custody of my people in Nepal. I can arrange to bring it back to India. Don’t worry, there is no difficulty.
Tehelka: Is there a problem in keeping it (tiger skin) here?
Kailash: You must understand. If the stuff is kept here there could be problems. In any case, the tiger skins have already been dispatched to Nepal. They are on their way to Tibet and that is why we stock them in Nepal. We sent the tiger skins a week ago.’
